Delhi Building Collapse: Trapped Students Making Calls From Debris, Says MLA

Several students are feared trapped after a six-storey building collapsed in the Satya Niketan area of Delhi, prompting a major rescue operation. South-West Delhi BJP MLA Anil Sharma said students staying in the building had made phone calls from beneath the debris. He said the exact number of people trapped could not yet be confirmed, while rescuers continued working at the site.

The collapsed structure, identified by police as Hostel Daze, was being used as paying-guest accommodation for college students. The building is located near Delhi University's South Campus, and construction work was reportedly underway in its basement when the structure came down. Witnesses estimated that as many as 15 people could be trapped, although officials had not confirmed the figure.

MLA Anil Sharma said several students had already been rescued, while others were believed to remain beneath the rubble. He said some trapped students were making phone calls from inside the collapsed structure, raising hopes that rescue teams could locate them. The government has deployed multiple emergency agencies and directed them to focus on reaching those still trapped.

The building collapsed at around 1:34 pm, bringing slabs and girders crashing down across the site. At least 12 fire engines were sent to the area, while an excavator was deployed to clear the debris. Additional machinery was also being brought in to speed up the removal of concrete slabs and other structural material.

Police, fire personnel, medical teams, emergency responders and a National Disaster Response Force team have been involved in the rescue operation. Those injured were taken to the AIIMS Trauma Centre for treatment and were reported to be in critical condition. Rescue personnel continued to search through the debris while authorities worked to establish the number of people inside the building at the time of the collapse.

Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta expressed concern over the incident and said the government was monitoring the situation. Delhi Home Minister Ashish Sood also said officials had directed all concerned teams to take necessary measures to protect those at the site. Authorities are expected to assess the circumstances surrounding the collapse, including the construction activity reportedly taking place in the basement.
