His publicist, Erica Bolton, confirmed that Hockney passed away on Thursday, just weeks before his 89th birthday, bringing to a close a remarkable artistic career that spanned more than seven decades. Widely regarded as one of the most influential and recognizable artists of the modern era, Hockney became famous for works that captured the bright, carefree atmosphere of Southern California.
His paintings, characterized by bold colors, distinctive compositions, and shimmering reflections on water, became defining images of 20th-century art and earned him international acclaim. Born in Bradford, Yorkshire, in northern England, Hockney emerged as a leading figure in the British art scene during the 1960s. Reflecting on his affection for California, Hockney once remarked in a 1979 interview with the Los Angeles Times that while London had many dreary places, he never found anything dreary in Los Angeles.
