Crans-Montana Holds Emotional Vigil for 40 Victims of Tragic Bar Fire
Hundreds gather in tearful vigil in Crans-Montana for around 40 victims of deadly New Year's bar fire.
A somber vigil unfolded in the alpine town of Crans-Montana on Thursday evening as hundreds of residents gathered in freezing temperatures to remember the victims of a deadly fire. Flowers and candles were laid quietly as the community mourned those who lost their lives while celebrating the New Year. The atmosphere was marked by silence, whispered conversations, and visible shock.
The fire broke out around 1:30 am at the crowded Le Constellation bar, killing around 40 people and injuring more than 100 others. Many victims were local residents, deepening the sense of collective grief. Authorities cordoned off the area near the bar, while police officers stood guard as mourners paid their respects nearby.
Several attendees spoke of personal loss and close calls. Many said friends, relatives, or acquaintances had been inside the bar when the fire erupted. Some described learning of the scale of the tragedy only after arriving at the scene, where the devastation left lasting emotional scars on the tight-knit community.

As candles filled a temporary memorial table and later spilled onto the frozen ground, mourners struggled to express their emotions. Some hugged and cried openly, while others stood motionless, staring ahead. A few shared stories of loved ones still missing or hospitalized, underscoring the ongoing uncertainty and pain.
The tragedy has cast a shadow over daily life in Crans-Montana, with several bars closing out of respect and Christmas lights still glowing amid grief. Earlier in the day, a memorial mass was held at the Montana-Station church, offering prayers and messages of hope to grieving families and residents.
Longtime locals said the loss has been felt by everyone, regardless of whether they were directly connected to the victims. “The pain of others is everyone’s pain,” one elderly resident said through tears. As the town mourns, residents remain united in grief, remembrance, and quiet solidarity.
