CM Fadnavis Orders Cancellation of Ministers Foreign Tours To Enforce Fiscal Discipline
Maharashtra cancels foreign tours of ministers, shifts to virtual meetings.
Devendra Fadnavis has ordered the immediate cancellation of all previously approved foreign tours for state ministers and senior bureaucrats, marking a significant step toward fiscal austerity and administrative cost-cutting in the state government. The decision was taken on Wednesday as part of a broader push to reduce public expenditure and align governance with national calls for resource conservation.
According to official sources, the directive suspends all upcoming international visits planned for administrative work, training programmes, or study tours. The Maharashtra government has instructed departments to shift international collaborations, consultations, and official meetings to virtual platforms instead of physical travel. The move is expected to significantly reduce expenditure on airfare, accommodation, and other foreign travel-related costs.
State authorities said the decision is aimed at strengthening fiscal discipline and ensuring better allocation of public funds. Government officials indicated that the shift toward digital governance tools, particularly video conferencing, will help maintain continuity in international engagement while avoiding unnecessary financial burden on the state exchequer.

In a related development, State Minister Shambhuraj Desai cancelled a planned personal foreign trip to London and Paris, citing alignment with the government’s austerity measures. His decision has been widely noted in political circles as an example of voluntary compliance with the state’s new directive, reinforcing the administration’s emphasis on “country first” governance principles.
The Maharashtra Legislative Assembly has also scrapped a proposed study tour of Japan for MLAs, with Speaker Rahul Narwekar confirming the cancellation. Instead, lawmakers are expected to rely on virtual exchanges and digital briefings for international exposure and policy learning, reflecting a broader shift in administrative practices.
The move comes in the backdrop of calls by Prime Minister Narendra Modi for reduced unnecessary travel and greater fiscal restraint amid global economic uncertainties and energy market volatility. The Maharashtra government’s decision is being seen as part of a coordinated effort across states to streamline spending while adapting governance to digital platforms.
