Chinese Foreign Minister’s India Visit: Hope for Border Peace

Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi visits India for crucial border talks ahead of PM Modi's China trip.

Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi arrived in New Delhi on Monday for a two-day visit, marking a significant step in India-China relations. Greeted at the airport by Gourangalal Das, Joint Secretary of the East Asia division of the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), Wang’s visit centers on critical border talks with National Security Advisor (NSA) Ajit Doval. The two are designated Special Representatives (SR) for the India-China boundary question, with their dialogue scheduled for Tuesday at 11 am.

The visit, occurring days before Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s trip to China for the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) summit, is seen as a pivotal effort to mend ties strained since the 2020 Galwan Valley clashes. Discussions are expected to focus on new confidence-building measures to ensure lasting peace along the contested border. Wang will also meet PM Modi at his residence at 7 Lok Kalyan Marg on Tuesday at 5:30 pm.

External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar, in talks with Wang, emphasized that India-China relations must be guided by mutual respect, sensitivity, and interest. “Differences must not become disputes, nor competition conflict,” Jaishankar stated, advocating for a candid and constructive approach to bilateral ties.

The talks also provide an opportunity to address global issues amid rising India-US tensions, following President Donald Trump’s decision to impose 50% tariffs on Indian goods, including a 25% penalty for India’s purchase of Russian crude oil.
