Chinese Consul Qin Jie Says India-China Relations Are On Positive Track

Chinese Consul says India-China relations moving in right direction.

China’s top diplomat in western India, Consul General Qin Jie, said on Wednesday that India–China relations are moving in the “correct direction”, signalling a cautiously optimistic tone from Beijing at a time when bilateral ties continue to navigate longstanding disputes alongside expanding economic and diplomatic engagement.

Qin Jie, who serves as Consul General of the People’s Republic of China in Mumbai, made the remarks to reporters while recalling recent high‑level interactions between leaders of the two countries, including meetings between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chinese President Xi Jinping over the past two years. He suggested that these engagements reflect a shared commitment to stabilising and advancing diplomatic relations.

The diplomat also pointed to the upcoming BRICS Summit, scheduled to be hosted by India in New Delhi later this year, as a platform that could further deepen cooperation and understanding between the two Asian powers. Qin described the rotation of the BRICS chair — with China set to host the summit the following year — as offering “special opportunities” to boost bilateral connection and contribute to global stability.

Analysts note that Xin‑New Delhi ties have seen a gradual thaw after years of tension, particularly along the disputed Line of Actual Control (LAC) in the Himalayas, where a protracted military standoff began in 2020. While core strategic issues remain unresolved, both sides have taken incremental steps to reduce friction, including confidence‑building border disengagements and the resumption of certain people‑to‑people exchanges.

Economic engagement also continues to be a significant arena of cooperation despite broader geopolitical pressures. Trade between the two neighbours — the world’s most populous countries — remains extensive, with both governments stressing the importance of multilateral trade frameworks and economic complementarity as stabilising forces.

However, observers caution that deep‑seated strategic and security concerns — from territorial disputes to regional geopolitical alignments — still temper the relationship’s trajectory. While Qin’s comments reflect diplomatic optimism from the Chinese perspective, New Delhi’s interlocutors have consistently emphasised that peace and tranquillity at the border are essential preconditions for any substantial improvement in bilateral ties.
