China Mudslide Kills Two, 10 Missing After Heavy Rain From Typhoon Saudel
Typhoon Saudel’s heavy rain triggers deadly China mudslide.
A mudslide killed two people and left 10 others missing in eastern China after days of torrential rain linked to Typhoon Saudel, damaging around a dozen houses in a village in Jiangxi province. The incident occurred early Saturday in Suichuan County, where rescue teams were deployed and residents were moved to safer locations amid concerns over further landslides and flooding.
Authorities reported that rescuers initially pulled three people from the affected area. One of them was found dead, while two others were rescued alive and reported to be in good condition. On Sunday morning, rescuers located another missing person among collapsed houses, bringing the confirmed death toll from the mudslide to two.
Heavy rainfall from Typhoon Saudel has also caused significant disruption in other parts of southern and eastern China. State broadcaster CCTV reported that two people were killed in Hunan province following downpours associated with the storm. The report noted that landslides and other weather-related disasters were triggered by the intense rainfall, although it did not provide further details about the deaths.

Saudel made two landfalls in Zhejiang province on August 28 before making a third landfall as a tropical storm in Fujian province on Thursday, according to China's official Xinhua news agency. Both provinces border Jiangxi. In Fujian, authorities reported that several residents remained unaccounted for following days of heavy rain, while more than 100 houses collapsed in Huating Town in Putian city.
A breached dike in Fujian on Thursday afternoon caused flooding in nearby villages and left residents trapped, prompting a large-scale emergency response. By Friday night, around 600,000 people had been evacuated from vulnerable offshore and onshore areas across the province, according to Xinhua. Rescue teams continued to monitor areas at risk from flooding, landslides and structural damage.
Footage broadcast by CCTV showed streets submerged under floodwater, with rescuers using inflatable boats to reach affected areas. Authorities have continued search and rescue operations in Jiangxi and other affected provinces while relocating residents from vulnerable locations. The extent of the damage and the final number of missing people could change as rescue teams gain access to areas affected by the heavy rainfall.
