China Conducts Live-Fire Drills Around Taiwan in Justice Mission 2025

China launches major 'Justice Mission 2025' military drills with live firing around Taiwan.

China announced on Monday that it is carrying out "major" military exercises around Taiwan, involving its Army, Navy, Air Force, and Rocket Force under the code name “Justice Mission 2025.” The drills are intended to demonstrate China’s readiness to respond to perceived threats to its sovereignty over the self-governed island.

A separate statement from the People’s Liberation Army (PLA) included a map highlighting five zones around Taiwan where live firing will take place on Tuesday from 8:00 am to 6:00 pm local time. Authorities have warned all unrelated vessels and aircraft to avoid these areas for safety reasons.

The announcement comes amid growing regional tensions following recent US arms sales to Taiwan and comments by Japan hinting at potential support for Taipei in the event of a future conflict. Beijing has previously expressed strong opposition to foreign involvement, including last week’s sanctions against 20 US defence firms.

Senior Colonel Shi Yi, PLA spokesperson, said the drills are a “legitimate and necessary action to safeguard China’s sovereignty and national unity,” and serve as a warning to Taiwan Independence forces. The statement emphasized that the operations are part of a larger, coordinated show of military strength by China.

Analysts note that these exercises could further escalate tensions in the Taiwan Strait, with implications for regional security and international trade. Shipping and air routes near the island may face temporary disruptions, and foreign observers are closely monitoring the scope and scale of the drills.
