Catastrophic Train Derailment Rocks Southern Germany
Deadly Train Crash Shocks Southern Germany
A regional passenger train derailed near Riedlingen, southern Germany, on Sunday evening, killing at least three people and injuring several others. The crash, which occurred around 6:10 p.m. local time in a forested area 158 kilometers west of Munich, saw at least two carriages of the train topple off the tracks, leaving a scene of devastation.
With approximately 100 passengers onboard, emergency responders, including police and firefighters, scrambled to the site, climbing atop overturned carriages to assist the injured. The exact number of injuries remains unclear as rescue efforts continue.
Recent heavy rainfall in the region has raised suspicions of a possible landslide as a contributing factor, though federal and local authorities are still investigating the cause. “Heavy rains may have triggered a landslide, but this is under investigation,” said Baden-Württemberg Interior Minister Thomas Strobl.
German Chancellor Friedrich Merz expressed his grief on X, offering condolences to the victims’ families. Deutsche Bahn, the national railway operator, is cooperating fully with investigators and has halted services on a 40-kilometer stretch of the affected route.
