Carney to Trump: Canada Thrives Because We Are Canadian
Carney rejects Trump’s claim, saying Canada thrives on its own.
Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney on Thursday firmly responded to President Donald Trump’s assertion at the World Economic Forum that “Canada lives because of the United States.” Speaking to a domestic audience in Quebec City ahead of a new legislative session, Carney highlighted Canada’s sovereignty and accomplishments.
“Canada doesn’t live because of the United States. Canada thrives because we are Canadian,” Carney said, emphasizing the nation’s independent identity and its achievements as a middle power in global affairs. He stressed that Canada’s success stems from its own policies, values, and determination rather than reliance on external powers.
The exchange followed Carney’s widely praised speech in Davos, Switzerland, which earned him a rare standing ovation. In his address, he warned that the US-led global governance system was facing a “rupture” and urged middle powers like Canada to recognize the shifting geopolitical landscape.

Trump reacted directly to Carney’s Davos remarks, telling reporters, “Canada lives because of the United States. Remember that, Mark, the next time you make your statements.” Carney, without naming Trump, countered by stressing the need for nations to chart their own course and uphold democratic values in an era of rising authoritarianism.
Carney concluded by reaffirming Canada’s role as a model for democratic governance. “Canada can’t solve all the world’s problems, but we can show that another way is possible,” he said, calling for international cooperation based on inclusion, human rights, and respect for global norms.
The confrontation highlights growing tensions between national pride and global political discourse, with Canada asserting its independence while maintaining strong international partnerships, including with the United States.
