Canadian tourist killed in shooting at Teotihuacan pyramids site

A Canadian citizen was killed and several others injured after a gunman opened fire at the Teotihuacan archaeological site, one of Mexico’s most visited tourist destinations, in a rare and shocking attack that has triggered international concern.

The incident took place on Monday at the UNESCO World Heritage site near Mexico City, where authorities said a man armed with a handgun climbed part of the Pyramid of the Moon and began firing at tourists. The sudden attack sent visitors fleeing in panic across the ancient complex.

According to officials, a Canadian woman was killed in the shooting, while at least 13 other people were injured. Victims included tourists of multiple nationalities, with several suffering gunshot wounds and others injured while attempting to escape the chaos, including falls from steep pyramid steps.

Security forces responded quickly to the scene, with local police initially engaging the situation before National Guard units arrived to secure the archaeological zone. The attacker later died by suicide at the site, authorities confirmed, and a firearm along with additional weapons and ammunition were recovered during the investigation.

Eyewitness accounts described a terrifying scene as gunfire echoed across the ruins, forcing visitors to take cover behind stone structures or lie flat to avoid being hit. Videos circulating on social media showed crowds scattering while shots rang out from elevated sections of the pyramid complex.

Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum expressed condolences to the victims’ families and confirmed that federal and state authorities had launched a full investigation into the attack. Canadian diplomatic officials are also understood to be in contact with Mexican authorities following the death of the Canadian national.

The Teotihuacan site, located about 40–50 kilometres northeast of Mexico City, is one of the country’s most significant archaeological landmarks, attracting millions of visitors annually. The incident has raised fresh concerns over security at major tourist destinations, given the rarity of such violent episodes at the historic complex.
