Canadian Man Charged Over Alleged Screwdriver Stabbings At Gurdwara, Police Confirm

Canadian police have charged a 27-year-old man in connection with the stabbing of two people at a gurdwara in Edmonton, Alberta, on August 21. The suspect, identified by the Edmonton Police Service (EPS) as Austin Sim-Pelletier, allegedly used a screwdriver during the incident at the Nanaksar Gurdwara in the early hours of the morning. Police said Sim-Pelletier has been charged with two counts of assault causing bodily harm, possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose and mischief. He is expected to appear in court again on September 18.

The incident took place shortly before 5am on August 21, when police said the suspect entered the Nanaksar Gurdwara and attempted to gain access to the prayer area. According to the Edmonton Police Service, he was confronted by staff after entering the premises. The confrontation subsequently escalated, resulting in two male patrons of the gurdwara being stabbed. The incident prompted an immediate response from people at the place of worship, with witnesses intervening to restrain the suspect before police arrived.

Edmonton Police Service said witnesses detained the man until officers from its Northeast Branch arrived at around 5:10am. The officers then took him into custody. Police have continued investigating the circumstances surrounding the confrontation and the subsequent stabbings, including examining the events that led to the violence inside the gurdwara. The case remains under investigation, with officers working to establish the full sequence of events and assess evidence gathered from the scene and witnesses.

The EPS Investigative Response Team and its Hate Crimes Unit are continuing to investigate the incident. Police said the investigation includes an assessment of evidence that could be relevant to the application of hate-related criminal provisions. However, authorities have not indicated that hate-related charges have been laid at this stage. Police said the assessment remains part of the ongoing investigation as officers examine the available evidence and determine whether additional legal provisions may apply.

EPS Investigations Branch Staff Sergeant Eric Stewart described the investigation as complex and said officers were still working through numerous investigative steps. Police have indicated that the case involves an ongoing examination of evidence and that the investigation has not yet been completed. The involvement of the Hate Crimes Unit reflects the authorities’ effort to determine whether the incident involved any elements that could meet the threshold for hate-related criminal provisions.

The charges against Sim-Pelletier follow the August 21 incident and will now proceed through the Canadian court system. His next court appearance is scheduled for September 18. Until the investigation and court proceedings establish the facts, the allegations against him remain allegations. Police continue to assess the evidence surrounding the confrontation at the Edmonton gurdwara, including the circumstances in which the two men were stabbed and whether any hate-related provisions should be applied.
