Ontario Premier Doug Ford responded to US President Donald Trump's push to rename Lake Ontario as “Lake America” by unveiling a giant sign on the Canadian shoreline declaring, “Lake Ontario. Now and Always.” The billboard-sized display was presented on Saturday near Grimsby, Ontario, as Canadian leaders responded to Trump's naming move with ridicule and defiance rather than outrage. Ford appeared at the event wearing a Team Canada soccer jersey before posing for photographs beside the large sign. The display measures 24 by 12 feet, or approximately 7.3 by 3.6 metres, and is mounted on legs about six feet high. Its top reaches roughly 18 feet, or 5.5 metres, above the ground, making the message visible as a prominent statement along the Canadian side of the lake.
The wording is also repeated in French, reflecting Canada's bilingual character. The display was unveiled after Trump issued an executive order directing US federal agencies to refer to Lake Ontario as “Lake America.” The move is part of a broader series of tensions between Washington and Ottawa that have included tariffs, Trump's repeated comments about Canada potentially becoming the 51st US state and personal criticism of Canadian political leaders. Ford framed the sign as a response to what he described as Trump's attempt to change the lake's name because Ontario and Canada were standing up for themselves.
The Ontario premier argued that the name “Lake Ontario” would endure beyond Trump's presidency, turning the sign into a symbolic statement about Canadian identity and sovereignty. The response reflects the broader tone adopted by several Canadian leaders, who have treated Trump's naming directive with humour and mockery rather than responding with direct diplomatic outrage. The lake forms part of the border region between Canada and the United States, making its name particularly significant in the context of the increasingly strained relationship between the neighbouring countries. Trump's directive follows months of friction between the two nations.
