Canada Offers 200 Fully Funded Scholarships Worth $100M to Indian Students
New Canada program provides 200 fully funded seats to Indian students worth $100M.
Canada has announced a major scholarship initiative worth up to $100 million (approximately Rs 921 crore) dedicated to Indian students, providing up to 200 fully funded seats as part of a new Canada-India Talent and Innovation Strategy. The announcement, made on March 2, 2026, during high-level engagements including visits by Canadian officials to India, aims to strengthen bilateral education ties, facilitate talent exchange, and attract top Indian talent to Canadian institutions.
The core of the program is a $100 million commitment from the University of Toronto, which will fund up to 200 fully funded scholarships for Indian nationals pursuing studies in Canada. These scholarships are expected to cover tuition, living expenses, and other costs, targeting high-achieving students, particularly in priority fields such as STEM, artificial intelligence, research, clean energy, healthcare, agriculture, and creative industries. While exact eligibility criteria, application processes, and timelines are yet to be fully detailed, the initiative emphasizes merit-based selection and aligns with broader efforts to create structured pathways for Indian students amid evolving immigration and education policies.
This scholarship push forms part of a wider bilateral agreement that includes 13 new partnerships between Canadian and Indian universities, three hybrid study locations in India (such as Dalhousie's innovation campus in collaboration with institutions like IIT Tirupati and IISER Tirupati, plus new University of Toronto and McGill Centres of Excellence), and expanded opportunities for student and faculty exchanges. Some collaborations will support dual-degree programs, embedded clinical experiences (including nursing pathways linked to Nova Scotia), and outbound mobility for Canadian students to India. The strategy also highlights increased research positions—over 300 funded roles—for Indian researchers in Canadian universities.

The move comes at a time when Canada seeks to reinforce its position as a preferred destination for international students from India, following recent diplomatic and educational outreach, including a historic visit by over 20 Canadian university presidents to India earlier in 2026. Prime Minister Mark Carney's administration has positioned the initiative as a key pillar to deepen people-to-people connections, boost innovation collaboration, and address talent needs in high-growth sectors. It also signals efforts to rebuild confidence in Canada-India education corridors after previous fluctuations in student inflows.
For Indian students, particularly those in Bengaluru and across Karnataka planning higher studies abroad, this represents a significant opportunity to access world-class education with reduced financial barriers. Interested applicants should monitor official channels from the University of Toronto, Global Affairs Canada, and partner institutions for forthcoming application guidelines, deadlines, and selection details. As the program rolls out over the coming years, it is poised to enhance academic mobility and long-term bilateral cooperation between the two nations.
