Canada Announces Faster Visitor, Work, Study, And Dependent Sponsorship Processing For Indians

Canada speeds up visa and immigration processing for Indians; child sponsorship timeline halved to eight months.

Canada has announced faster visa and immigration processing for Indian travellers, students, workers, and families, aiming to streamline applications amid rising demand from India. The update, issued by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) on Wednesday, reduces waiting times for several key visa categories and dependent sponsorship applications.

Visitor visas for Indian applicants now take approximately 57 days, down from 71 days previously, while processing inside Canada averages 18 days. Similarly, work permits for Indians are expected to be processed in seven to eight weeks, a significant improvement from earlier timelines of 256–259 days. Study permit processing for Indian students remains stable at about four weeks. Dependent child sponsorship from India has seen one of the largest reductions, with processing cut from 16 months to eight months.

Other visa categories show mixed trends. Super visa processing for Indians has improved slightly to 208 days, while Express Entry permanent residence programs such as CEC and FSWP remain around seven months. Provincial Nominee Program (PNP) timelines have extended slightly to seven months for enhanced streams and 13 months for base streams. Family sponsorship timelines show modest changes, with spousal sponsorship from outside Canada (non-Quebec) averaging 15 months, and parents/grandparents sponsorship outside Quebec now taking 34 months.

The improvements primarily target Indian applicants, while processing times for other countries show varying trends. For example, Pakistan sees visitor visa processing at 49 days and work permits at 30 weeks, while US applicants experience seven to ten weeks for work permits and 17 days for visitor visas. Citizenship grant processing has also improved to 13 months, with certificate issuance reduced to 10–11 months.

The IRCC’s update reflects Canada’s efforts to support international mobility for education, work, and family reunification, particularly from India, which accounts for a large share of new visa applicants. Officials said the changes are intended to reduce backlogs and improve service standards while maintaining rigorous review processes.

With these revised timelines, Indian students, professionals, and families planning to relocate to Canada can expect significantly faster processing, enhancing opportunities for education, employment, and family reunification in the country.
