Calls Targeting Trump Echo During Khamenei Funeral Ceremony, Escalating US-Iran Tensions
Anti-Trump chants heard during Khamenei funeral ceremony.
A performer addressing mourners during the funeral ceremony for Iran's late Supreme Leader, Ali Khamenei, publicly called for the death of US President Donald Trump on Sunday, drawing loud cheers from a massive crowd gathered in Tehran. According to the Associated Press, the remarks marked the first known instance of an emcee at the funeral openly calling for Trump's death during the official ceremony, underscoring the heightened tensions between Iran and the United States following recent hostilities.
The comments were made by poet Mohammad Rasouli, who addressed mourners over loudspeakers during the state funeral. Leading chants directed against the United States and Israel, Rasouli first prompted the crowd to respond with slogans of "Death to America!" and "Death to Israel!" before turning his attention to Trump. According to the report, the crowd responded enthusiastically as the rhetoric escalated during the ceremony, which drew hundreds of thousands of participants to the Iranian capital.
The funeral was held following the death of Khamenei, who, according to the report, was killed at the age of 86 in a joint US-Israeli strike on February 28. His death marked the beginning of a wider conflict involving Iran, significantly escalating tensions across the Middle East. The ceremony became both a public memorial and a platform for expressions of defiance against Iran's longtime adversaries, with anti-US and anti-Israel slogans dominating much of the proceedings.

The inflammatory remarks came despite ongoing diplomatic efforts aimed at easing regional tensions and negotiating a more permanent end to the conflict. Relations between Tehran and Washington remain deeply strained, with both sides continuing to exchange accusations over military actions and regional security. While funeral gatherings in Iran have historically featured anti-American and anti-Israeli slogans, the direct reference to the US president represented a further escalation in rhetoric during an event of national significance.
The chants and speeches delivered at the funeral are likely to draw international attention amid already fragile relations between Iran, the United States and Israel. Although the statements reflected the views expressed during the ceremony, they do not represent official policy announcements by the Iranian government. The event nevertheless highlighted the depth of public anger among many mourners and the enduring hostility that continues to shape relations between the three countries as diplomatic efforts face significant challenges.
