Cajun Navy VP Nancy Guthrie Says PCSD Refused Offered Help During Response Operations
Nancy Guthrie says PCSD refused emergency assistance offer
The United Cajun Navy has raised questions over its exclusion from assisting in the search operation for Nancy Guthrie, alleging that the Pima County Sheriff’s Department declined offers of external support despite the organisation submitting a detailed assistance plan for the ongoing investigation. United Cajun Navy Vice President Brian Trascher spoke about the matter during an appearance on NewsNation’s Katie Pavlich Tonight, where he outlined the group’s attempts to coordinate with local authorities.
He said the volunteer disaster-response organisation had offered to deploy trained canine units, drone teams, and additional search personnel to support official efforts in locating the missing woman. Trascher explained that the group’s proposal was designed to function as a supplementary resource rather than a replacement for law enforcement operations. According to him, the intention was to act as a “force multiplier,” increasing manpower and technical capacity in challenging terrain where searches may require extensive coverage and specialised equipment.
He further stated that the organisation had prepared a structured operational plan detailing how volunteers would be deployed in coordination with authorities. The plan, he said, focused on expanding search reach in remote and difficult-to-access areas, particularly regions near the Arizona border where the group believed there was a possibility that Nancy Guthrie could have been located. However, Trascher claimed that the Pima County Sheriff’s Department issued what he described as a “blanket declination” of outside assistance, effectively rejecting the involvement of volunteer groups.

He said the decision prevented experienced civilian responders from contributing to the search effort, despite their track record of participation in large-scale disaster response operations across the United States. “We do know that there was sort of like a blanket declination from the sheriff’s office to accept any outside help,” Trascher said during the interview, adding that the organisation had expected to assist given the complexity of the terrain and the urgency of the search.
He also suggested that the decision to limit external participation reduced the overall manpower available for ground operations. “They just decided they were not going to take the outside help,” he said, describing the outcome as unexpected given the group’s willingness to coordinate under official direction and protocols. Trascher emphasised that the organisation’s objective was to support law enforcement efforts and assist the family of the missing woman by increasing the scale and efficiency of the search.
He noted that volunteer teams, including drone operators and trained search personnel, are often used as additional resources in disaster zones and missing-person cases across different jurisdictions. “We really felt strongly that there was a good chance that she could have ended up somewhere along the border,” he said, explaining the group’s reasoning for offering assistance in the region. He added that their goal was to provide “extra eyes, ears, hands and feet” to help bring closure to the Guthrie family. The remarks have drawn attention to broader discussions in the United States about coordination between law enforcement agencies and volunteer search-and-rescue organisations.
Groups like the United Cajun Navy have frequently been involved in hurricane response and emergency recovery operations, but their level of involvement in active police investigations varies depending on local policies and operational control. In this case, authorities have not publicly addressed the claims in detail or confirmed the reasons for declining external assistance. The search for Nancy Guthrie remains ongoing, with law enforcement agencies continuing to lead operations in the region while maintaining control over investigative procedures and field deployments.
