A deadly avalanche on Broad Peak in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir has claimed the lives of four mountaineers, while six others, including renowned Nepalese climber Nirmal Purja, remain missing as rescue teams battle difficult weather and treacherous terrain to search for survivors. Authorities continued rescue efforts on Friday, but adverse conditions in the high-altitude Karakoram range have complicated operations. The avalanche struck Broad Peak, the world's 12th-highest mountain at 8,051 metres, at an altitude of around 7,000 metres on Thursday. According to the Alpine Club of Pakistan (ACP), the 10-member expedition had begun its summit push when the avalanche swept across the climbing route at around 9 am local time.
The force of the snow slide engulfed the climbers, scattering members of the expedition across the steep mountain face. Rescue teams later recovered four bodies, while efforts continued to locate the remaining six climbers. The missing group includes six Nepalese climbers, one Pakistani, one Omani, one American and one Chinese national. Among those unaccounted for is veteran Nepalese mountaineer Nirmal Purja, one of the world's most accomplished high-altitude climbers. Purja gained international recognition after completing the ascent of all 14 of the world's 8,000-metre peaks in just over six months in 2019, a feat that dramatically surpassed previous records.
His achievements have made him one of the most respected figures in global mountaineering, and news of his disappearance has drawn widespread attention from the international climbing community. Search and rescue teams have been working under extremely challenging conditions. Broad Peak lies in the remote Karakoram range near K2, where high winds, freezing temperatures, unstable snow conditions and the risk of further avalanches often hamper rescue missions. Helicopter operations in the region are heavily dependent on weather, while rescuers on the ground face significant risks as they navigate glaciers, crevasses and avalanche-prone slopes. Officials have not provided details on the identities of the four deceased climbers, and authorities continue to assess the safest approach for extending the search.

Broad Peak has long been regarded as one of the most demanding mountains in the world despite being considered less technically difficult than neighbouring K2. The mountain attracts experienced climbers from across the globe every year, but its extreme altitude, rapidly changing weather and avalanche hazards make every expedition dangerous. Climbers attempting the summit typically face prolonged exposure to sub-zero temperatures, thin oxygen levels and unstable snowfields, particularly above 7,000 metres, where even minor weather changes can quickly become life-threatening. Avalanches remain among the leading causes of fatalities in the Karakoram and Himalayan mountain ranges.
The latest tragedy has once again highlighted the risks associated with high-altitude mountaineering, even for seasoned climbers. Authorities have said rescue efforts will continue as weather conditions allow, though hopes of finding survivors diminish with the passage of time in the harsh alpine environment. The Alpine Club of Pakistan has not released further information regarding the circumstances leading up to the avalanche or the condition of the missing climbers. As search operations continue, the international mountaineering community is closely watching developments and hoping for positive news despite the formidable challenges confronting rescuers.
