#BREAKING: India, Pakistan To Start Talks At a Neutral Site: US Secretary of State Marco Rubio

India, Pakistan To Start Talks At a Neutral Site

On May 10, 2025, US President Donald Trump announced that India and Pakistan had agreed to a “full and immediate ceasefire,” a claim echoed by US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, who stated both nations would begin talks on a broad range of issues at a neutral site.

The announcement followed intense US-mediated diplomacy amid escalating tensions triggered by a terrorist attack in Indian-administered Kashmir on April 22, 2025, which killed 26 people. The attack, attributed to Pakistan-based groups by India, led to retaliatory missile strikes, airspace closures, and diplomatic fallout, including India’s suspension of the Indus Waters Treaty.

"Over the past 48 hours, VP Vance and I have engaged with senior Indian and Pakistani officials, including Prime Ministers Narendra Modi and Shehbaz Sharif, External Affairs Minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar, Chief of Army Staff Asim Munir, and National Security Advisors Ajit Doval and Asim Malik. I am pleased to announce the Governments of India and Pakistan have agreed to an immediate ceasefire and to start talks on a broad set of issues at a neutral site. We commend Prime Ministers Modi and Sharif on their wisdom, prudence, and statesmanship in choosing the path of peace," said Rubio.

Rubio’s diplomatic efforts included calls with Indian External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar, Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, and Pakistan’s Army Chief General Asim Munir, urging de-escalation and direct dialogue.

Jaishankar emphasized India’s “measured and responsible” response to cross-border terrorism, while Pakistan denied involvement in the attack and called for a neutral probe. Posts on X suggest a neutral-site meeting is under consideration, though neither India nor Pakistan has officially confirmed the ceasefire or talks.
