Bondi Beach Hero: Donations Cross $1.1 Million For Ahmed al Ahmed After He Disarmed Shooter

Donations for Ahmed al Ahmed, the 43-year-old bystander hailed as a hero for disarming one of the gunmen during Sunday's deadly shooting at Bondi Beach, have surpassed A$1.1 million (approximately US$744,000) in just one day. The funds, raised primarily through a GoFundMe campaign, are intended to support his recovery after he underwent surgery for gunshot wounds sustained in the incident. Australian leaders and the public have praised his bravery, describing it as an act that likely prevented further fatalities.

Ahmed, a Muslim father of two, took cover behind parked cars before charging at one of the attackers from behind, seizing the rifle and knocking the gunman to the ground. Authorities confirmed that his intervention interrupted the assault, which was carried out by a 50-year-old father and his 24-year-old son targeting a Hanukkah celebration. The attack claimed 15 lives, marking Australia's worst mass shooting in nearly three decades.

The GoFundMe campaign saw an overwhelming response, with billionaire hedge fund manager Bill Ackman emerging as the largest donor at A$99,999. Ackman shared the fundraiser on his X account, amplifying its reach. New South Wales Premier Chris Minns visited Ahmed in hospital, while supporters gathered outside St George Hospital to show solidarity. A Muslim-run charity also initiated separate fundraising efforts to aid his speedy recovery.

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese lauded Ahmed's courage as exemplifying "the best of humanity" in contrast to the "worst" displayed by the perpetrators. "He ran towards danger, putting his own life at risk," Albanese told ABC News, emphasising how such actions saved lives amid the terrorist act. Yomna Touni, representing the charity, underscored the community's intent to maximise support for the hero's rehabilitation.

The surge in donations reflects national gratitude and unity following the tragedy, with contributions pouring in from across Australia. Ahmed remains hospitalised but stable, as investigations into the motives and planning behind the attack continue.

Public vigils and messages of support have highlighted interfaith solidarity, particularly toward the Jewish community targeted in the incident. The overwhelming financial response ensures Ahmed and his family receive substantial assistance during his recovery period.
