Bolsonaro Leaves House Arrest for Urgent Medical Tests

Former Brazilian President undergoes hospital evaluation.

Former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro was granted temporary leave from house arrest on Saturday to undergo medical examinations in Brasilia, following approval from a judge. The authorization allowed Bolsonaro a window of six to eight hours at DF Star hospital to address health concerns that have persisted since his 2018 campaign injury.

Medical staff at DF Star hospital reported that Bolsonaro sought evaluation for symptoms including fever, a persistent cough, gastroesophageal reflux, and hiccups. Diagnostic tests confirmed residual effects of two recent pulmonary infections, alongside ongoing esophagitis and gastritis. After a thorough assessment, doctors discharged him later that day, prescribing medication for continued treatment at home. Bolsonaro’s health has been a recurring concern, with multiple hospitalizations since a near-fatal stabbing during a 2018 campaign event. His most recent surgery, in April 2025, addressed a bowel obstruction linked to the same incident.

Currently, Bolsonaro faces significant legal challenges. He is on trial at Brazil’s Supreme Court for allegedly attempting to retain power following his defeat in the 2022 presidential election to President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva. A panel of five justices is set to issue verdicts and sentences on five charges between September 2 and 12. Bolsonaro, a polarizing figure in Brazilian politics, has consistently denied any wrongdoing in the case.

The former president has been under house arrest since August 5, following a ruling by Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes, who oversees the investigation. Moraes cited Bolsonaro’s violation of precautionary measures, specifically pointing to content disseminated through the social media accounts of his three sons, all of whom are lawmakers. This breach prompted stricter oversight of his activities.

Outside DF Star hospital, a small group of fewer than 20 supporters gathered to voice their backing for Bolsonaro. They described his legal troubles as politically motivated persecution, echoing sentiments expressed by international figures. Notably, U.S. President Donald Trump recently labeled the prosecution a “witch hunt” and tied his decision to impose a 50% tariff on Brazilian imports to Bolsonaro’s situation, a move that has sparked debate in diplomatic circles.

Bolsonaro’s temporary hospital visit underscores the intersection of his health struggles and legal battles, which continue to captivate public attention in Brazil and beyond. As the Supreme Court prepares to rule, the former leader remains a central figure in the nation’s polarized political landscape.
