Blue Origin's New Glenn Rocket Explodes at Cape Canaveral During Routine Hotfire Test in Florida
Blue Origin's New Glenn rocket exploded at Cape Canaveral during a pre-launch hotfire test.
A Blue Origin The New Glenn rocket exploded on the launch pad during a testing operation late Wednesday night, creating a massive fireball and sending thick smoke into the sky at the company’s launch facility in Florida. The incident occurred during a routine hot fire test at Launch Complex 36 ahead of the rocket’s planned fourth mission. Officials confirmed that all personnel present at the site were safely accounted for and no injuries were reported following the explosion.
Blue Origin, the private aerospace company founded by billionaire Jeff Bezos in 2000, described the incident as an “anomaly,” a term commonly used in the space industry to refer to technical failures or explosions during launch operations. In a statement shared on the social media platform X, the company said it experienced an anomaly during the day’s hotfire test and would continue investigating the cause of the incident. The company added that further updates would be provided once more information became available.
The explosion reportedly took place shortly before 9 p.m. local time while the New Glenn rocket, designated Glenn LN-01, was undergoing pre-launch engine testing. Videos circulating on social media showed the rocket erupting into flames, followed by a large plume of smoke visible across the surrounding area. Witnesses near Cape Canaveral reported hearing a loud blast, while debris and flames spread across parts of the launch site following the explosion.

Jeff Bezos also reacted publicly to the incident, acknowledging the seriousness of the setback while confirming that all employees and staff members remained safe. Calling it a “very rough day,” Bezos said it was still too early to determine the exact root cause behind the explosion. He stated that the company would rebuild damaged infrastructure if necessary and continue with future launch plans despite the failure, adding that the mission remained worthwhile in the long term.
The explosion is expected to significantly impact Blue Origin’s New Glenn program, which had ambitious launch targets for 2026. The company had planned up to 12 New Glenn missions this year as part of its growing commercial space operations. Industry analysts believe the incident will likely result in an extended pause while engineers and investigators examine the technical issues that caused the explosion and evaluate the damage sustained at the launch facility.
The setback could also have broader implications beyond Blue Origin’s commercial ambitions because the company plays an important role in NASA’s Artemis lunar exploration program. New Glenn is considered a major component of Blue Origin’s future space transportation strategy, aimed at competing with other heavy-lift rockets in the rapidly expanding private space sector. Investigators are now expected to conduct a detailed review of the testing procedures and rocket systems before any future launch operations are approved.
