BITS Pilani Goa Faces Crisis as Another PhD Student Dies; Pattern Demands Action
A sixth student dies by suicide at the BITS Pilani Goa campus.
A 26-year-old PhD scholar at BITS Pilani’s Goa campus allegedly died by suicide at his rented accommodation outside the college premises on Wednesday morning, according to police. The incident has once again drawn attention to mental health concerns and student safety on the campus, which has witnessed multiple such cases in recent months. Authorities have confirmed that the matter is under investigation and inquest proceedings have been initiated.
Police said the incident came to light after information was received regarding the student’s death at his residence. Officials stated that a purported suicide note was recovered from the spot, in which the deceased reportedly mentioned that no one was responsible for his death. However, investigators have not independently verified the contents of the note and are examining all aspects of the case as part of standard procedure.
The latest incident adds to a troubling pattern at the institute, as six student deaths have been reported at the BITS Pilani Goa campus since December 2024. The recurring cases have raised serious concerns among students, parents, and education authorities regarding the mental health support systems available within the institution and the broader academic environment.

In the aftermath of earlier incidents, Goa Chief Minister Pramod Sawant had announced an inquiry through a district-level monitoring committee. The committee was tasked with evaluating the institutional ecosystem, student support mechanisms, and mental health response framework at the campus. Its report was submitted to the government on February 2, though further action based on its findings has not been publicly detailed.
Authorities have reiterated that each case is being examined independently, with police continuing to collect evidence and record statements as part of ongoing investigations. Meanwhile, campus administrators and officials are expected to review existing counselling and student welfare measures in light of repeated incidents.
The situation has intensified calls for stronger mental health interventions in higher education institutions, with experts stressing the need for early identification of stress, accessible counselling services, and proactive student support systems. Investigations into the latest case remain underway.
