Bengaluru Woman Studying Dentistry Dies by Suicide, Case Filed Against College Principal and Lecturers

Bengaluru medical student dies by suicide; family alleges mental harassment by lecturers and principal.

A tragic incident unfolded in Bengaluru on Monday, January 12, 2026, when a dentistry student, Yashaswini, died by suicide at her residence in the Chandapura area. Her family has accused five faculty members of her college, including the principal, of subjecting her to persistent mental harassment, leading to the registration of a case at Suryanagar Police Station.

According to the complaint filed by Yashaswini's mother, the lecturers repeatedly humiliated the student in front of her classmates by making derogatory remarks about her skin color and openly questioning her ambition to become a doctor. The allegations further include insensitive comments about her clothing and dismissive responses when she sought help for an eye ailment. The family also claimed that Yashaswini was academically targeted, being denied permission to attend seminars and deliberately excluded from radiology casework assignments.

The case has been booked against the five lecturers, including the college principal, based on the detailed complaint submitted by the bereaved mother. Police officials have confirmed that an investigation is underway to examine the circumstances surrounding the student's death and the validity of the harassment claims. Preliminary inquiries are focusing on statements from classmates, college records, and any available evidence of the alleged conduct by the faculty.

Authorities have assured that the investigation will be conducted impartially, with appropriate legal measures to be taken based on the findings. As the probe progresses, the incident serves as a grim reminder of the need for stronger safeguards to protect students from harassment and ensure their mental well-being in competitive academic environments.
