Bangladesh Platform Issues 24-Day Ultimatum Over Killing of Leader Sharif Osman Hadi

Inqilab Moncho demands swift trial in Hadi murder case.

Inqilab Moncho, a political platform in Bangladesh, has issued a stringent 24-day ultimatum to the interim government led by Muhammad Yunus, demanding the completion of the trial for the murder of its leader Sharif Osman Hadi and the prosecution of all individuals involved, including the shooter, masterminds, accomplices, and those aiding escape or providing shelter.

Hadi was assassinated by gunfire one day after the Election Commission announced the February 2026 general election date. He was immediately airlifted to Singapore for advanced medical treatment but succumbed to his injuries on the night of December 18, 2025. The killing has intensified political tensions ahead of the polls.

Abdullah Al Jaber, member secretary of Inqilab Moncho, announced the deadline, emphasizing that the entire case must reach verdict within 24 days. The ultimatum was formally posted on the organisation’s official Facebook page and reported by local media, underscoring the platform's resolve to secure accountability.

Protests organised by Inqilab Moncho have escalated, with blockades and shutdowns disrupting major cities. On Sunday, demonstrators blocked Dhaka’s key Shahbagh intersection, while nationwide actions continued. Senior officials, including environment adviser Syeda Rizwana Hasan and Dhaka Metropolitan Police commissioner Sheikh Md Sazzat Ali, engaged with protesters on Saturday night regarding investigation progress.

Controversy surrounds police claims that the two primary suspects fled to India via the Haluaghat border into Meghalaya. Both Meghalaya Police and the Border Security Force have categorically denied the assertion, with BSF Inspector General OP Upadhayay stating there is no evidence of any border crossing, labelling the reports baseless.
