Bangladesh Government Denies Communal Motive in Rajbari Killing Incident
Bangladesh interim government condemns Rajbari killing, insists it stems from criminal extortion not communal violence.
The Bangladesh interim government has strongly condemned the killing that occurred in the Pangsha Police Station area of Rajbari on Wednesday night, while firmly denying claims that the incident had a communal angle. In an official statement issued on Thursday, the government expressed concern over what it described as the spread of misleading information on social media and in sections of the media.
According to the statement, police reports and preliminary investigations indicate that the incident was not related to communal violence. Authorities said the death resulted from a violent confrontation linked to extortion and criminal activity, not religious identity. The deceased, identified as Amrit Mondal alias Samrat, allegedly entered the area to collect extortion money.
The government stated that Amrit Mondal was a listed criminal accused in several serious cases, including murder and extortion filed in 2023. Arrest warrants had already been issued against him, and officials said he lost his life during a clash with local residents who became agitated during the incident.

Police arrested one of Mondal’s associates, Selim, from the scene and recovered a foreign-made pistol and a pipe gun. Authorities confirmed that three cases have been registered in connection with the incident and that investigations are ongoing to determine individual responsibility.
While condemning the killing, the interim government made it clear that it does not support extrajudicial actions, mob violence, or any form of unlawful conduct. It emphasized that legal action would be taken against all individuals directly or indirectly involved, in accordance with the law.
The statement also warned against attempts by vested groups to portray the incident as a communal attack by highlighting the victim’s religious identity. Calling such claims baseless and malicious, the government urged citizens and media outlets to act responsibly and avoid spreading provocative narratives that could disrupt social harmony, reaffirming its commitment to law, order, and communal peace.
