Bangladesh Drops IPL Ban, Restoring Access for Millions of Cricket Fans Overnight

Bangladesh ends IPL broadcast ban hours before the 2026 season opener begins.

In a last-minute policy reversal, Bangladesh has lifted its ban on broadcasting the Indian Premier League 2026 season, restoring access to one of the country’s most-watched sporting events just hours before the opening match. The move clears the way for live telecast and streaming of the tournament, signalling a potential easing of tensions in cricketing ties between Bangladesh and India.

The ban had been imposed earlier this year by a previous interim government following diplomatic strain linked to decisions by the Board of Control for Cricket in India, including the release of Bangladeshi cricketer Mustafizur Rahman from an IPL franchise. The restriction disrupted broadcasting arrangements and cut off millions of viewers in Bangladesh from accessing the tournament, while also impacting advertising revenues tied to the league.

The reversal was confirmed on March 28 by Information and Broadcasting Minister Zahir Uddin Swapan, who stated that the new administration would avoid mixing politics with sports. The government described the decision as part of a broader shift toward viewing sporting events through a commercial and entertainment lens, rather than a diplomatic one, allowing broadcasters to resume coverage without delay.

The decision is expected to have immediate economic and diplomatic implications. Broadcasters and cable operators regain a major source of advertising and subscription revenue, while the development is also being seen as an early indication of improving relations between the BCCI and the Bangladesh Cricket Board. For fans, the lifting of the ban restores access to a tournament that enjoys massive popularity in the country beyond national team matches.

With the restrictions removed, IPL 2026 matches will be available across multiple platforms in Bangladesh. Television broadcasts will be carried on the Star Sports Network, while discussions are ongoing for potential mid-season licensing agreements with local broadcasters. Digital streaming is expected to be accessible through regional platforms, subject to rights arrangements and partnerships.

Globally, streaming access remains anchored on platforms like Disney+ Hotstar, which continues to hold key digital rights for the IPL. The timing of the policy shift ensures that Bangladeshi viewers can follow the tournament from its opening clash, reflecting the enduring appeal of the league and its influence on regional sports consumption patterns.
