Australians Demand Tighter Gun Control After Bondi Beach Attack

Polls show overwhelming Australian support for stricter gun laws after Bondi Beach shooting.

In the aftermath of the fatal mass shooting at Sydney’s Bondi Beach, Australians are showing overwhelming support for stricter gun control measures, according to two recent polls. The YouGov survey conducted over seven days until Monday found that 92 per cent of respondents want gun ownership made illegal or subject to tighter regulations.

Among Labor Party supporters, 50 per cent favored banning gun ownership entirely, while 47 per cent supported tightening existing laws. Only three per cent of respondents opposed any change. “Australians are united in their support for stronger gun control,” said Paul Smith, Director of Public Data at YouGov.

A second poll by market research firm Resolve Strategic, published by Nine Entertainment, found that 76 per cent of Australians favor stricter gun laws, with just 10 per cent preferring the status quo. The survey also revealed broad support for measures such as restricting gun licenses to Australian citizens and limiting the number of firearms an individual can own.

Additional proposed measures include tougher regulations on high-powered rifles and the creation of a national firearms database. Over 80 per cent of respondents backed these reforms, highlighting strong public consensus on enhancing gun safety and accountability.

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has pledged decisive action, announcing a national firearm buyback scheme and plans for federal, state, and territory governments to explore stricter regulations. The initiative follows the revelation that one of the Bondi Beach gunmen legally owned six firearms, underscoring vulnerabilities in current licensing laws.

With public sentiment strongly favoring reform, the Australian government is expected to pursue comprehensive changes to gun ownership regulations, aiming to reduce the risk of future tragedies and ensure community safety across the nation.
