Australian PM Praises India’s Democracy And Rapid Economic Growth On Independence Day

Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese on Saturday extended his wishes to India on its 80th Independence Day and praised the country's progress, democratic credentials and economic potential. In a statement marking the occasion, Albanese described India as the world's largest democracy and fastest-growing major economy, while reflecting on the country's journey since Independence. He also highlighted the importance of the Indian-Australian community in strengthening ties between the two countries.

Albanese acknowledged the difficult struggle that preceded India's Independence and described August 15 as the beginning of a new chapter filled with hope. He noted that India had continued to progress during the eight decades since Independence and had emerged as a country with significant global influence and potential. His message focused on India's achievements as well as its future prospects.

The Australian Prime Minister also highlighted the longstanding relationship between Australia and India. He pointed to strong economic and strategic partnerships between the two countries and praised the contribution of the Indian-Australian community. Albanese described the community as an important link between the two nations and noted its role in strengthening Australia's relationship with India.

Albanese also referred to Prime Minister Narendra Modi's recent visit to Australia and described the bilateral relationship as increasingly important. He noted the warm reception Modi received during the visit and stressed that the partnership between Australia and India had become more consequential. He also expressed Australia's interest in expanding cooperation with India in new and emerging areas.

The Australian leader said the two countries could build on their existing engagement with support from Australians of Indian heritage. He joined the Indian community in celebrating India's history, culture, diversity and achievements, while looking ahead to opportunities arising from closer bilateral cooperation. His message placed the relationship within the broader context of growing economic and strategic engagement between the two countries.

Modi had also expressed confidence following his Australia visit that the outcomes would further strengthen the India-Australia partnership and open new avenues for cooperation across different sectors. Albanese's Independence Day message similarly emphasised the potential of the relationship and the contribution of people of Indian heritage to the bilateral connection, while extending Australia's goodwill to India as it marked eight decades of Independence.
