Assam Plans UCC Bill Introduction And Cabinet Reshuffle In Early June
Assam government plans UCC Bill introduction and cabinet expansion during upcoming Assembly session period.
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Wednesday said that the state government is preparing to introduce the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) Bill in the upcoming Assam Legislative Assembly session, while also indicating that a cabinet expansion is likely to take place in the first week of June.
Speaking to reporters in Guwahati, Himanta Biswa Sarma said the government remains committed to bringing UCC legislation in the state and expressed confidence that the proposed Bill would be passed during the ongoing Assembly session. He added that the legislative process would move forward in line with earlier commitments made by the ruling party.
The Chief Minister also confirmed that the Assembly session would begin with the election of the new Speaker of the Assam Legislative Assembly. He said the first day of proceedings would focus on completing this constitutional process before other legislative business is taken up in the House.

On the proposed cabinet reshuffle, Himanta Biswa Sarma said the expansion is expected to be carried out gradually and is likely to be finalised in early June. However, he did not provide details on the number of ministers expected to be inducted or any changes in portfolio allocation.
The announcement of the UCC Bill is expected to generate significant political debate in Assam, with the ruling party maintaining that a uniform set of civil laws would ensure equality across communities. Opposition parties, meanwhile, are likely to raise concerns regarding its impact on personal laws and traditional practices followed by various groups in the state.
The Assam government has in recent years pursued a series of legislative and administrative reforms aimed at standardising governance and improving administrative transparency. With the UCC Bill and cabinet expansion both on the agenda, the upcoming Assembly session is expected to be closely watched for its political and policy implications.
