Assam Floods: Death Toll Rises to 100, Nearly 1.4 Lakh People Affected

The flood situation in Assam remained critical on Sunday as two more people died, raising the death toll in this year’s floods to 100, according to an official bulletin. The Assam State Disaster Management Authority said one person each drowned in floodwaters in Golaghat and Karbi Anglong districts during the previous 24 hours.

More than 1.37 lakh people remain affected across Charaideo, Darrang, Golaghat, Jorhat, Karbi Anglong, Nagaon and Sivasagar districts. Golaghat is the worst-affected district, with nearly 70,000 people impacted, followed by Sivasagar with around 40,000 and Jorhat with more than 16,000 residents facing flood-related disruption.

The overall situation showed a slight improvement from Saturday, when nearly 1.5 lakh people across eight districts were affected. However, 456 villages remain inundated, and floodwaters continue to disrupt daily life in several areas. The disaster management authority reported that 11,933.46 hectares of cropland had been damaged across the state.

Authorities are operating 125 relief camps and distribution centres in six districts, where 49,061 displaced people are taking shelter. During the previous 24 hours, officials distributed 710.44 quintals of rice, 127.85 quintals of dal, 38.34 quintals of salt and 3,773.7 litres of mustard oil among affected communities.

Several rivers continued to flow above their respective danger levels, maintaining pressure on low-lying areas. The Dhansiri was above the danger mark at Golaghat and Numaligarh, while the Kushiyara had crossed the threshold at Sribhumi. Floodwaters also damaged embankments, roads, bridges and other infrastructure in multiple districts.

The disaster has also affected 43,331 domestic animals and poultry across Assam, increasing pressure on rural households already dealing with crop and property losses. Relief and monitoring operations remain underway as authorities assess damage, support displaced residents and track river levels in vulnerable districts.
