Assam CM Himanta Sarma Demands Gogoi Disclose Foreign Property, Bank Details
Assam CM Himanta Sarma asks Gaurav Gogoi to disclose Pakistan, UK property and bank details.
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Tuesday publicly challenged state Congress president Gaurav Gogoi to disclose details of his properties in Pakistan and the United Kingdom, raising fresh controversy ahead of the upcoming elections. Speaking to reporters during the BJP’s manifesto release event in Guwahati, Sarma accused Gogoi of not revealing his wife’s income from Pakistan or her bank account in the neighboring country in his affidavit to the Election Commission.
Sarma asserted that Gogoi allegedly owns properties in his wife’s name in both Pakistan and London, while Raijor Dal president Akhil Gogoi has previously claimed the Congress leader may also hold property in the United States. “This is not merely an allegation; I want him to submit details of his transactions in Pakistan in his affidavit to the Election Commission,” Sarma said. He further suggested that if Gogoi does not possess any property abroad, he should at least make public the transactions of his wife’s Pakistani bank account, even if it is inactive, before four neutral individuals. Sarma named four journalists to verify these accounts and provide independent confirmation.
The chief minister also hinted at “serious allegations” against Gogoi, which he chose not to disclose ahead of the elections to avoid influencing the electoral atmosphere, promising to reveal more information after polling concludes. He cited a recent Pakistan TV debate indicating that Gogoi had visited the country as part of an NGO, questioning the nature of his visit despite Gogoi’s previous statements that it was private. Sarma suggested the debate reflected a favorable Pakistani view of Gogoi, implying potential security concerns.

Sarma has repeatedly targeted Gogoi and his British wife, Elizabeth Clare Gogoi, alleging links with the Pakistani intelligence agency ISI. He claimed a Special Investigation Team (SIT) had been set up to probe these matters, though specific findings have not been publicly disclosed. The allegations have intensified political tensions in Assam, with the CM framing the issue as one of transparency and accountability.
On a related note, Sarma addressed the recent defection of senior Congress leaders to the BJP, asserting that there are no restrictions on party-switching and that anyone from Assam is welcome to join. “Go and ask Congress why they cannot keep their members with love and respect. What magic does Himanta have that they come to us and not stay with them? This is a question that should be posed to the Congress and not to us,” he said.
The exchange adds to the growing pre-election rhetoric in Assam, highlighting property disclosure, alleged foreign connections, and party defections as key issues in the state’s political landscape ahead of polling. With the Assembly elections approaching, such allegations are expected to dominate public debate and campaign narratives.
