Armed Group Kills At Least 20 In Nigeria During Police Gunfight

At least 20 killed in Nigeria armed clash with police.

At least 20 people have been killed in an armed attack in the Kawel community in Bokkos area of Nigeria’s Plateau State, according to police officials. The incident occurred on Sunday and has once again highlighted the persistent security challenges in the country’s north-central region.

Police spokesperson Alfred Alabo said security forces were quickly deployed to the scene after reports of the attack. Upon arrival, officers exchanged gunfire with the armed group, forcing the attackers to retreat. No arrests have been made so far, and authorities have not identified the group responsible for the violence.

Local officials confirmed that the bodies of the victims were released to their families for burial after relatives declined autopsy procedures. The attack has added to growing concerns over recurring violence in Plateau State, which has witnessed repeated clashes and deadly assaults in recent years.

While no group has claimed responsibility, the region has long been affected by overlapping security crises, including communal conflicts, banditry, and insurgent activity. Nigeria’s north-central region, including Plateau State, has seen frequent attacks that have resulted in significant civilian casualties and displacement.

In response to the incident, Plateau State Governor Caleb Mutfwang directed emergency and humanitarian agencies to provide immediate relief and assistance to affected families. Officials said support measures are being coordinated to help those impacted by the latest wave of violence.

The attack follows a similar incident in March in which 20 people were killed in Gari Ya Waye community, also in Plateau State, underscoring the continuing instability in parts of the region despite ongoing security operations.
