Anil Kumar Rastogi Urges Focus Beyond Politics After PM Modi-Padma Video Row
Rastogi calls for non-political view of viral video.
Padma Shri awardee Anil Kumar Rastogi has responded to the online controversy surrounding his interaction with Prime Minister Narendra Modi during the Padma Awards ceremony, saying that “not everything is about politics” and urging social media users to avoid overinterpreting a brief moment captured on camera. His clarification came after a video of the interaction went viral, triggering widespread discussion and debate across digital platforms.
The clip in question shows Rastogi walking up to receive his Padma Shri award at the Rashtrapati Bhavan ceremony, where he appeared visibly emotional and greeted the Prime Minister with folded hands. During the exchange, he seemed to miss a handshake that Modi had reportedly extended, leading to contrasting interpretations online. While some users viewed the moment as a social lapse, others defended the actor, attributing it to the nervousness and overwhelming nature of receiving a prestigious national honour.
Addressing the issue directly in a post on X, Rastogi said the incident had been misrepresented and taken out of context. He explained that he was “anxious and overwhelmed” at the time, as receiving one of India’s highest civilian awards was a significant personal milestone. He emphasised that the moment of missing the handshake was unintentional and occurred amid the emotional intensity of the ceremony, adding that it should not be construed as a lack of respect.

Rastogi further expressed disappointment over the way the focus had shifted away from the significance of the Padma Awards ceremony itself. He noted that instead of highlighting the achievements of awardees and the spirit of recognition, some online discussions were concentrating on a fleeting interaction. The veteran actor and scientist reiterated that such interpretations distort the reality of what transpired and detract from the dignity of the occasion.
In his statement, Rastogi also addressed speculation regarding his political stance, clarifying that he is a supporter of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and holds Prime Minister Modi in high regard. He stressed that his respect for the Prime Minister remains unchanged and that the viral video should not be used to create unnecessary controversy or assumptions about his personal views. His remarks were aimed at settling the debate and restoring focus to the award ceremony itself.
The clarification has since drawn significant attention, with many users on social media echoing his sentiment that isolated moments during high-pressure events should not be overanalysed. The incident has also reignited discussions about the speed at which digital narratives form around public figures, often based on incomplete context. As the conversation continues online, Rastogi’s statement stands as a call for restraint and perspective in interpreting public interactions involving national figures and award ceremonies.
