Andaman Lt Governor Discusses Development Projects With Prime Minister Modi

Admiral D K Joshi updates on the tourism surge, infrastructure roadmap, and Great Nicobar initiatives.

Andaman and Nicobar Islands Lieutenant Governor Admiral D K Joshi (Retd) met with Prime Minister Narendra Modi in New Delhi on Wednesday to provide updates on infrastructure, tourism, and major development projects in the Union Territory. The discussion focused on transforming the archipelago into a key economic hub in the Indo-Pacific region, with several initiatives nearing completion, according to official sources. Joshi outlined an ambitious roadmap to enhance connectivity, boost tourism, and drive economic growth in the strategically located islands.

The Lieutenant Governor highlighted a significant surge in tourism, with domestic arrivals increasing by 41% and foreign visitors by 27% over the past year, marking the highest-ever tourist influx to the Andaman and Nicobar Islands. He also detailed progress on the Great Nicobar Island (GNI) project, a flagship initiative featuring a greenfield airport, an international container transshipment terminal, a power plant, and a modern township. Detailed Project Reports (DPRs) have been prepared, and site work is advancing steadily. Additionally, Joshi briefed Modi on offshore oil exploration efforts, signalling the Union Territory’s growing economic potential.

Beyond infrastructure and tourism, Joshi emphasised achievements in education, healthcare, agriculture, shipping, policing, and sports. These advancements reflect the administration’s focus on holistic development to improve living standards and economic opportunities for residents. The Andaman and Nicobar Islands, comprising 836 islands, are strategically vital due to their proximity to key maritime routes in the Bay of Bengal.
