Ancelotti Flags Ryan Williams as Danger Man Ahead of India vs Brazil
Williams scored in India's 1-1 draw against Panama last week.
Brazil head coach Carlo Ancelotti has identified India forward Ryan Williams as a player capable of causing problems ahead of Saturday’s international friendly at Kolkata’s Salt Lake Stadium. Brazil have arrived in the city for the much-anticipated fixture, with Ancelotti revealing that his team closely watched India’s recent 1-1 draw against Panama and took note of Williams’ attacking threat.
Williams, who was born in Australia and completed his switch to represent India, scored in the draw against Panama and has emerged as an important attacking option for the national side. Speaking ahead of the Brazil game, Ancelotti said his team had studied India and specifically highlighted Williams. “We saw the last game that they played against Panama and we thought it was a good team. In fact, with the striker Williams, that could be dangerous for us,” Ancelotti said.
Williams’ recent international form has given India another attacking option following Sunil Chhetri’s retirement. His goal against Panama came after he had already begun establishing himself in the national setup, although his international record remains in its early stages. Against Brazil, he will face a defence featuring experienced players such as Marquinhos, who is set to make his 90th appearance for the national team.

Ancelotti also discussed India’s sporting culture and the place of football alongside cricket. While acknowledging cricket’s prominence in the country, the Brazil coach said culture was not the most important factor and expressed hope that India could continue developing its football programme. “Cricket is a fantastic sport. We are happy to be here, to show our quality and for all the people,” he said, adding that India had tried to compete in football and that he hoped for the country’s progress in the sport.
For Brazil, the friendly is also an opportunity for Ancelotti to assess players as he continues to develop the squad. The coach said the match should not be viewed as a test but as an opportunity, particularly for younger players looking to establish themselves. He also acknowledged that Brazil are coming through a difficult period and said building a new generation capable of competing at the highest level was a motivation for the team.
India enter the match after their 1-1 draw against Panama, with Williams scoring their goal, while Uruguay are scheduled to face them in Kolkata on October 6. Marquinhos said Brazil had analysed India carefully and described every match as an opportunity to represent the national team. With Brazil’s star-studded squad attracting most of the attention, Williams will nevertheless enter the game knowing that Ancelotti has already singled him out as a potential threat.
