Amit Shah Says Hindi’s Progress Must Respect Other Indian Languages
Shah stresses Hindi’s growth alongside India’s linguistic diversity.
Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Monday said the progress of Hindi would be meaningful only when it takes place alongside the dignity, promotion and protection of other Indian languages. Extending greetings on Hindi Diwas, Shah described India’s linguistic diversity and cultural richness as a source of strength, stressing that the country’s many languages should not be viewed as a weakness.
Shah said every Indian language carries its own history, folk traditions and worldview, and plays an important role in shaping the values and outlook of younger generations. He emphasised that the presence of several languages contributes to India’s broader idea of unity in diversity. According to him, linguistic diversity strengthens the country’s cultural identity rather than creating a barrier to national unity.
The Home Minister also underlined the wider significance of language, saying it is more than a means of communication. He described language as the “memory” and “self-awareness” of a society, connecting people with their history, culture and traditions. Shah said Hindi has played an important role as a language of dialogue, connection and coordination among different sections and communities across the country.

Shah stressed that Hindi should not be seen as representing or replacing any particular Indian language. Instead, he said its role should be that of an important link between India’s different languages and the country’s national unity. He also pointed to his own linguistic background, noting that Gujarati is his mother tongue while Hindi enables him to communicate directly with people in different parts of India.
Hindi Diwas is observed annually on September 14 to mark the adoption of Hindi as an official language by the Constituent Assembly on September 14, 1949. On the occasion, Shah also urged young people to learn from the wider world while remaining connected to their own languages and cultural roots. He appealed to parents to communicate with their children in their mother tongue, emphasising its connection with family, heritage, history and culture.
