American Airlines Passenger Restrained With Duct Tape, Arrested After Violent Midair Outburst
Disruptive American Airlines passenger duct-taped, arrested after Baltimore diversion.
An American Airlines flight was diverted to Baltimore after a passenger allegedly became violent during the journey, forcing fellow travellers and crew members to restrain him. The passenger was reportedly secured to his seat using duct tape and zip ties before the aircraft landed. Authorities took him into custody after the flight reached Baltimore.
The incident involved American Airlines Flight 618, which was travelling from Dallas-Fort Worth to Newark. According to authorities and the airline, the disruption occurred roughly two hours after takeoff. The passenger reportedly began shouting at another traveller seated nearby, prompting a flight attendant to intervene and attempt to calm the situation.
The disturbance allegedly escalated when the passenger directed a racial slur at a Black flight attendant and made anti-gay remarks. He also reportedly became physically aggressive toward the passenger seated beside him. A woman who attempted to intervene was allegedly pushed during the confrontation, prompting other passengers to step in as the situation became increasingly difficult to control.

Three male passengers reportedly helped restrain the man while flight attendants provided duct tape and zip ties. Video and photographs from the aircraft showed passengers and crew members holding him down as he resisted. The passenger was eventually secured to his seat, with reports stating that tape was also used to prevent him from moving his head.
One of the passengers who intervened was identified as Juan Mejia, a retired law enforcement officer. He described the situation as changing rapidly from a quiet flight into a chaotic confrontation. The airline and the Federal Aviation Administration confirmed that the aircraft was diverted to Baltimore because of the passenger’s disruptive behaviour.
After the plane landed, law enforcement officers took the passenger into custody and arrested him. His identity has not been publicly disclosed. The incident adds to concerns surrounding disruptive behaviour on commercial flights, while authorities are expected to determine what charges may follow from the alleged assault and other actions during the flight.
