Alberta Hiker's Composure Saves Her and Dog as Grizzly Bear Charges Multiple Times

Alberta hiker escapes grizzly bear encounter; remains calm during repeated charges.

A woman and her pet dog narrowly escaped a potentially dangerous encounter with a grizzly bear during a morning hike in Alberta, Canada, in an incident that has gained widespread attention after a video of the encounter went viral on social media. The footage shows the woman remaining remarkably calm as the large bear repeatedly followed and charged toward her and her leashed dog on a forest trail before eventually retreating without attacking.

According to Alberta Forestry and Parks, the incident occurred near Mount Engadine Lodge while the woman was walking with her dog. The one-minute-and-21-second video, recorded by the hiker herself, captures the grizzly bear stalking the pair along the trail. As the dog repeatedly turned toward the approaching animal, the woman calmly instructed the bear to leave by repeatedly saying, "No, go away," while continuing to back away without panicking.

The situation intensified when the bear suddenly accelerated and charged toward the woman and her dog. Although she shouted in response, she avoided running, instead maintaining her composure as the animal approached. The bear eventually halted its charge and moved toward the nearby woods, giving the woman an opportunity to quickly retreat toward the trailhead, where several parked vehicles were visible. Both the woman and her dog escaped the encounter without reported injuries.

Following the incident, Alberta Forestry and Parks issued a bear warning for the area surrounding Mount Engadine Lodge, including sections of Mount Shark Road and the Rummel Lake Trail. Authorities have advised hikers and visitors to exercise extreme caution while travelling through the region and to remain alert for wildlife activity. Officials continue to monitor the area to reduce the risk of further encounters between people and bears.

The video has generated significant discussion online, with many social media users praising the woman's calm response during the frightening encounter. Several commenters described the footage as terrifying and commended her decision not to run, noting that sudden flight can sometimes provoke predatory behaviour in wild animals. Others also highlighted the importance of carrying bear spray while hiking in regions known to be inhabited by grizzly bears.

Wildlife experts generally advise hikers in bear country to remain calm, avoid running, keep pets under control and slowly create distance if they encounter a bear. Carrying bear spray, travelling in groups where possible and making noise while hiking are also commonly recommended safety measures. The Alberta incident serves as a reminder of the importance of wildlife awareness and preparedness when exploring remote natural areas where large predators may be present.
