Air India Passenger Allegedly Damages Window Pane Before Landing, Review Underway

Air India passenger allegedly damages window pane before landing.

An Air India passenger has been referred to the airline’s internal committee after allegedly breaking the inner window pane of an aircraft mid-flight on a Chandigarh-to-Delhi service, prompting a review of possible “no-fly list” action. The incident occurred on Air India flight AI1879 on June 7 as the aircraft was preparing to land in Delhi.

According to officials familiar with the matter, the passenger reportedly damaged the inner glass panel of a window despite repeated verbal and written warnings issued by the cabin crew during the flight. The situation was subsequently escalated to ground authorities upon landing.

After the aircraft touched down safely in Delhi, the passenger was handed over to airport security personnel for further action. Officials confirmed that the matter has now been forwarded to Air India’s internal committee, which will determine whether the individual should be classified as an “unruly passenger” under aviation safety regulations and placed on the airline’s no-fly list.

An Air India spokesperson confirmed the incident, stating that flight AI1879 operated normally and landed safely despite the onboard disruption. The airline said the cockpit crew followed standard operating procedures and reported the matter to airport security after issuing repeated warnings to the passenger during the flight.

The airline further emphasised that passenger and crew safety, as well as the integrity of the aircraft, were not compromised at any point. Aviation authorities in India treat incidents involving unruly passenger behaviour seriously, with airlines empowered to initiate restrictions depending on the severity of the conduct. The internal committee’s decision will determine whether further action, including flying restrictions, will be imposed on the passenger as per civil aviation guidelines governing in-flight misconduct.
