Air India Cuts Weekly Flights To San Francisco, New York, Toronto, Suspends Chicago Route

Air India has suspended its direct flights from New Delhi to Chicago and reduced the frequency of its weekly services to key North American destinations, including San Francisco, New York, and Toronto. The airline said the changes are part of a broader rationalisation of international operations scheduled between June and August 2026.

The decision comes amid a challenging operating environment for long-haul carriers, with Air India citing multiple factors behind the adjustment. These include continued airspace restrictions over certain regions, which are affecting optimal flight routing, and persistently high jet fuel prices that have significantly increased operating costs on international routes.

According to the airline, the restructuring is aimed at improving operational efficiency and aligning capacity with current demand conditions. Long-haul flights to the United States and Canada are among the most fuel-intensive segments of its network, making them particularly sensitive to fluctuations in global crude oil prices and aviation turbine fuel costs.

The development also comes in the backdrop of broader calls for more prudent fuel consumption and reduced non-essential travel amid global energy uncertainty. Air India’s revised schedule reflects a cautious approach to capacity planning as it balances profitability with network coverage. While the suspension of the Delhi–Chicago route marks a significant change in its North American operations, the airline has indicated that adjustments across select routes are temporary and subject to review depending on market and operating conditions.Passengers affected by the changes are expected to be accommodated through alternative connections, though the airline has not yet detailed specific rerouting arrangements.
