AIIMS Delhi Crosses 80% Faculty Recruitment Mark With Major Hiring Drive
Over 460 faculty appointments strengthen AIIMS Delhi's academic workforce.
The All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) New Delhi has completed one of its largest faculty recruitment drives in recent years, filling more than 80 per cent of the advertised teaching positions across over 50 medical and allied specialties. The recruitment exercise comes months after Parliament raised concerns over significant vacancies at the country's premier medical institution, highlighting their impact on healthcare delivery, medical education and research. Officials said the appointments are expected to strengthen patient care while enhancing academic and research capabilities across departments.
The recruitment drive resulted in the selection of 214 candidates against 265 advertised faculty posts at the AIIMS New Delhi main campus, while another 155 candidates were selected against 199 positions at the AIIMS-Central Armed Police Forces Institute of Medical Sciences (CAPFIMS) campus in Maidan Garhi. More than 3,200 applicants participated in the recruitment process for positions ranging from Assistant Professor to Professor. However, the results for a few departments remain pending due to ongoing court cases, with final appointments expected once legal proceedings conclude.
The recruitment follows a written reply by Union Health Minister J.P. Nadda in the Lok Sabha on March 27, which revealed that 446 of the 1,306 sanctioned faculty posts and 2,542 of the 13,911 non-faculty posts at AIIMS Delhi were vacant. The Department-related Parliamentary Standing Committee on Health and Family Welfare had also expressed concern over the shortage, stating that it was affecting patient services and placing additional pressure on existing doctors and staff. The committee had recommended a time-bound recruitment drive to fill at least 85 per cent of sanctioned faculty positions.

Among the departments, Anaesthesia advertised the highest number of vacancies with 39 posts, although its final recruitment figures are still pending because of legal matters. At present, the Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology recorded the highest number of appointments in this recruitment cycle, with 20 faculty members selected. The newly appointed faculty are expected to reduce waiting times for consultations, surgeries and specialised treatments, while also improving teaching standards and expanding research activities across multiple disciplines.
AIIMS officials said the six-month recruitment process incorporated blockchain-enabled digital technology to ensure transparency and integrity. Candidates' assessment scores were securely locked using one-time password authentication, while the final merit list was generated through predefined software algorithms without manual intervention, except in tie-breaking situations. Officials described the exercise as one of the institute's most significant faculty recruitment initiatives in recent years, reflecting AIIMS New Delhi's commitment to modernising governance, strengthening healthcare services and building a stronger academic and research ecosystem.
