AI Regulation And US Industry Dominance Dominate Discussions At G7 Summit

G7 leaders debate AI governance and US tech dominance.

Leaders attending the G7 Summit in Evian-les-Bains are set to conclude three days of discussions on Wednesday, with the final sessions focusing on the future of artificial intelligence and concerns over US dominance in the rapidly expanding industry. The closing agenda reflects growing global debate over regulation, competition, and the economic impact of advanced AI technologies.

Informal talks were held earlier among leaders of France, the United Kingdom, Italy, Germany and Canada ahead of the main session on global economic imbalances. French President Emmanuel Macron’s office said the discussions were aimed at coordinating positions on trade pressures, growth strategies and wider geopolitical risks affecting the global economy.

The AI-focused discussions are expected to include participation from top executives in the technology sector. Among those attending are Sam Altman of OpenAI, Demis Hassabis of Google DeepMind, and Dario Amodei of Anthropic, highlighting the growing influence of private AI firms in shaping global policy discussions.

US President Donald Trump is expected to conclude the formal talks with a focus on AI governance and economic growth, before stopping for a dinner at the Palace of Versailles near Paris. He is scheduled to depart for Washington later on Wednesday after the conclusion of the summit programme.

The summit has also been marked by discussions on the ongoing war between Russia and Ukraine and a tentative US-Iran agreement aimed at ending hostilities in the Middle East. UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer said he discussed potential sanctions on Russian oil with Trump, noting that while talks were “constructive,” no final decision had been reached on reimposing restrictions.

The G7 Summit brings together France, Canada, Germany, Italy, Japan, the United States and the United Kingdom, along with guest nations including India, South Korea, Kenya, Ukraine and the United Arab Emirates. The presence of both government leaders and technology executives underscores the expanding scope of the forum, which increasingly blends traditional geopolitical issues with emerging challenges in digital governance and artificial intelligence regulation.
