After Presidential Pardon, Former Chadian PM Appeals For Forgiveness And Reconciliation

Former Chadian Prime Minister and opposition leader Succes Masra called for forgiveness and reconciliation after being released from prison under a presidential pardon. Masra was freed on Friday and addressed supporters at the headquarters of his political party, The Transformers, in N'Djamena during the early hours of Saturday. He urged his supporters to put past grievances aside and focus on reconciliation.

Masra told the gathering that he held no grudges against those who had wronged him and called for forgiveness. His release came after Chadian President Mahamat Idriss Deby Itno issued decrees granting presidential pardons to nine political leaders and reducing sentences for other convicts. Masra was among the opposition figures who received clemency under the decision.

Masra had been sentenced to 20 years in prison and ordered to pay 1 billion CFA francs in damages. Eight other leaders from the Consultation Group of Political Actors, including party presidents and secretaries-general, were also pardoned following requests submitted to the president. Authorities clarified that while the pardons lifted the prison sentences, civil penalties remained enforceable.

The pardon was initially announced by President Mahamat Deby on August 10, shortly before Chad's Independence Day. In an address to the nation, Deby referred to the country's history of war, division and intercommunal conflicts, stressing the importance of national unity. He emphasised that Chad's future would depend on its ability to remain united despite the challenges facing the country.

Masra, who leads The Transformers, served as prime minister of Chad's transitional government from January to May 2024. He was arrested in May 2025 and sentenced in August 2025 on charges including inciting hatred and revolt and complicity in murder. His release under the presidential pardon now opens the possibility of renewed political engagement after months of imprisonment.

Thanking President Deby for the pardon, Masra also expressed his willingness to work with the government on reforms. He indicated that his party was prepared to cooperate with the authorities while continuing to pursue political change. His appeal for forgiveness and readiness to work with the government marked a conciliatory tone following his release and came as Chad continued to face challenges linked to political divisions and instability.
