Africa CDC Thanks India for Ebola Medical Supplies Sent to Combat DRC Outbreak

Africa CDC thanks India for Ebola aid to DRC.

Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC) on Wednesday expressed gratitude to India for providing emergency pharmaceutical supplies to support Ebola response efforts in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), amid a worsening outbreak and deteriorating humanitarian conditions in the region.

In an official statement shared on social media platform X, Africa CDC said the shipment from India included essential diagnostics, therapeutics, infection prevention and control materials, and case management supplies. The agency noted that the consignments were received in Uganda by its Eastern Africa Regional Collaboration Centre and will be deployed to affected communities in eastern DRC to strengthen outbreak containment efforts.

The Ebola outbreak in the DRC, linked to the Bundibugyo strain, has raised serious concerns among global health authorities due to the absence of an approved vaccine or specific antiviral treatment for this variant. Health responders are relying primarily on rapid detection, isolation, and strict infection prevention protocols to contain the spread.

World Health Organization Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus has warned that eastern DRC is facing a “catastrophic collision of disease and conflict,” with ongoing violence in Ituri province significantly hampering response operations. He noted that displacement of populations, overcrowded camps, and disrupted health infrastructure are accelerating transmission risks while limiting the ability of frontline workers to trace contacts and contain cases effectively.

Compounding the crisis, security concerns have further restricted movement across the region. Uganda People’s Defence Force Chief of Defence Forces Muhoozi Kainerugaba announced that security forces have sealed the entire border with the DRC until further notice as a precautionary measure to prevent cross-border spread of the disease.

He cautioned that any attempt to breach the restrictions would pose serious health risks and confirmed that updates will be issued as the situation evolves. India’s contribution has been described by Africa CDC as part of its continued commitment to supporting health security across the African continent, particularly during large-scale infectious disease outbreaks.
