"A Remarkable Disdain": Araghchi Targets Netanyahu's Appeal to U.S. Christians Amid Escalating War

Araghchi accuses Netanyahu of disrespecting Jesus amid tensions

Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi has sharply criticised Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, accusing him of showing “open disdain for Jesus Christ,” in a pointed diplomatic broadside that has further inflamed the religious‑national rhetoric around the US–Israel–Iran war. Araghchi’s comment appears to target Netanyahu’s repeated appeals to conservative Christian‑evangelical audiences in the United States, while framing the Israeli leader’s stance as hypocritical given Israel’s military posture towards Iran.

In a public statement, Araghchi wrote that for a politician “so reliant on the goodwill of Christians in the United States,” Netanyahu’s “open disdain for Jesus Christ (PBUH)” is “remarkable,” inserting the Islamic honorific “peace be upon him” normally reserved for prophets to underscore the religious charge. The remark fits into a broader Iranian narrative that portrays Netanyahu’s reliance on evangelical‑Christian backing as inconsistent with reverence for Christian doctrine, especially as Israel and the US conduct joint strikes on Iranian territory.

Araghchi has been one of Tehran’s most visible voices in the current conflict, repeatedly ruling out negotiations with Washington and vowing that Iran will sustain its missile operations for as long as necessary after the US–Israel offensive began in late February. At the same time, he has framed the war partly as a moral and religious contest, arguing that Israel’s actions in the region—both in Gaza and against Iran—undermine not only Islamic interests but broader principles of humanity and faith.

The jibe about Netanyahu’s attitude toward Jesus comes amid a wider use of religious symbolism in the Middle East war, with evangelical‑Christian groups in the US openly supporting Israel and some Iranian‑linked media highlighting stories of Iranians converting to Christianity, which Tehran’s official line often rejects as “deviant” or “foreign‑inspired.” By accusing Netanyahu of disrespecting Jesus, Araghchi is trying to turn the Prime Minister’s own religious‑political alliances into a vulnerability, while reinforcing Iran’s claim that its struggle is not only geopolitical but also moral and spiritual.

For diplomats and analysts, Araghchi’s language signals that the current confrontation is moving beyond conventional state‑to‑state rivalry into a more overt culture‑and‑faith war, with leaders using scripture and prophecy to rally domestic and international audiences. The remark about Netanyahu’s “open disdain for Jesus Christ” is likely intended less as a theological debate and more as a weaponised narrative to cast Israel’s leadership as morally incoherent, at a time when Iran is seeking to rally both Muslim publics and global Muslim‑Christian audiences against the US–Israel military campaign.
