A Diplomatic Opening? Iran’s Signal Raises Hopes For US Engagement

Iran on Monday indicated that diplomatic channels with the United States remain active despite continued hostilities, saying messages from Washington have been conveyed to Tehran through intermediaries. Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmaeil Baghaei said mediators had recently shared proposals from the US but did not reveal specific details about the communications.

Speaking at a press conference in Tehran, Baghaei said Iran’s diplomatic efforts had remained active in recent days and that ideas from different mediators had reached Iranian officials. He said the messages were being reviewed while accusing Washington of contributing to the escalation of tensions between the two countries.

Baghaei maintained that Iran does not seek hostility with neighbouring countries but urged regional nations to prevent their territories from being used for attacks against Tehran. He also warned that Iran’s armed forces would continue responding militarily as long as what he described as ongoing attacks and hostilities continued.

The Iranian spokesperson also reiterated Tehran’s position on an interim memorandum of understanding signed with the US, saying the agreement was clear and contained no ambiguity. He stated that the document consists of 14 clauses and argued that there was no justification for Washington to withdraw from or violate the understanding.

Baghaei further discussed Iran’s stance on the Strait of Hormuz, a strategically important maritime route for global energy shipments. He said Tehran has maintained from the beginning that future management of the waterway remains Iran’s responsibility and would be handled through consultations with Oman and discussions with regional countries.

The diplomatic remarks came as global energy markets closely monitored developments between Iran and the US. Oil prices, which had risen sharply amid fears of prolonged conflict and possible disruptions to shipping routes, eased slightly following indications that diplomatic engagement remained possible. Analysts said markets were balancing concerns over regional instability with hopes that negotiations could help reduce tensions.
