97-Year-Old Rescued From Nepal Flood Rubble After Four-Hour Operation

Guna Maya Bohara, a 97-year-old woman, has emerged as a symbol of hope after being rescued alive from beneath the rubble of a care home following devastating floods in Nepal. A video showing Bohara sitting inside the shovel of an excavator after being pulled from the debris has gone viral, drawing widespread attention to her remarkable survival amid the destruction caused by the disaster.

Bohara had been trapped beneath mud and rubble after floodwaters tore through the area where she was staying. Rescue efforts continued for around four hours as police personnel and members of the Nepal Army worked to locate and free her from the debris. Her great-nephew, Dipak Bohara, had travelled from Kathmandu to assist with the rescue operation and was present as efforts were made to reach her.

The rescue team eventually succeeded in pulling the elderly woman out of the wreckage alive. Her mud-covered clothes and exhausted appearance were captured in footage that showed her being carried to safety in an excavator's bucket. The extraordinary scene quickly became one of the most widely shared images associated with the floods, highlighting both the scale of the destruction and the determination of rescuers.

Dipak Bohara recalled the moment his family learned that the 97-year-old was still alive beneath the debris. According to him, family members had moved further into the affected area using a rope tied to trees and discovered that Bohara had survived, even as many others appeared to have died. He compared her appearance after the rescue to that of “a warrior” returning victorious from a battle.

Bohara is now recovering in a hospital following her rescue. She has reportedly been unable to explain how she managed to survive while trapped beneath the rubble for such an extended period. Her survival has provided a rare moment of hope amid a disaster that has caused widespread destruction and raised concerns over the safety of communities exposed to floods and related hazards.

The image of the 97-year-old survivor being brought out of the wreckage in an excavator has since travelled far beyond the rescue site. Her story has given a deeply human dimension to the disaster, drawing attention to the courage of survivors and the efforts of rescue teams. As Nepal continues to deal with the aftermath of the floods, Bohara's survival has become an enduring image of resilience in the face of catastrophe.
