9/11 Victims’ Families To Receive Therapeutic Bears Ahead Of 25th Anniversary
Therapeutic bears will offer comfort to families remembering loved ones.
More than 1,000 families who lost loved ones in the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks are set to receive specially designed weighted teddy bears ahead of the 25th anniversary of the tragedy. The initiative is being organised by The Comfort Cub, a nonprofit focused on supporting people dealing with loss and emotional trauma. Distribution of the bears is scheduled to begin in New York ahead of anniversary commemorations.
The Comfort Cubs resemble traditional stuffed animals but are designed to provide a form of deep-touch pressure through their added weight. When held close to the body, the pressure is intended to create a comforting sensation similar to an embrace and may help reduce physical tension. Organisers hope the bears will provide families with a tangible source of comfort during a particularly emotional period of remembrance.
The idea behind the weighted bears comes from The Comfort Cub founder Marcella Johnson’s own experience with grief. After losing her infant son, Johnson experienced the physical effects that can accompany profound loss and developed the original weighted bear as something people could hold during difficult moments. The organisation has since used the concept to provide comfort to people facing grief and emotional distress.

Teddy bears also have a connection to the aftermath of the September 11 attacks. In the months following the tragedy, volunteers from across the United States sent stuffed animals to grieving children as gestures of comfort and support. Organisers are emphasising that grief does not necessarily diminish simply because years have passed. With 25 years approaching since the attacks, families who lost loved ones continue to carry the emotional impact of the tragedy. Johnson has stressed that those experiencing grief should know they are not alone and that others have faced similar experiences and found ways to move forward.
The distribution of the Comfort Cubs is intended as a small gesture of support during the anniversary period, while also recognising the lasting impact of the September 11 attacks on victims’ families. Organisers hope the bears will remind recipients that their loss continues to be remembered and that a wider community remains connected to those affected by the tragedy.
