8.1 Magnitude Earthquake Near Mindanao Prompts Tsunami Alerts Across Several Countries

Major quake prompts evacuations and tsunami precautions.

A powerful 8.1-magnitude earthquake struck the island of Mindanao in the southern Philippines on Monday, prompting tsunami warnings across several countries in the western Pacific region. According to the Helmholtz Centre for Geosciences, the earthquake occurred at a shallow depth of 10 kilometres, increasing the likelihood of strong ground shaking across affected areas. Tremors were also felt in parts of eastern Indonesia, including the provinces of North Sulawesi and North Maluku, raising concerns about potential regional impacts.

Following the earthquake, the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center issued an alert warning that hazardous tsunami waves could affect coastal areas of the Philippines, Indonesia, Palau, Taiwan and Papua New Guinea within hours of the quake. Authorities across the region began monitoring sea conditions and implementing emergency response measures. The warning prompted residents in vulnerable coastal communities to prepare for possible evacuations and move to safer locations.

In the southern Philippine city of General Santos, local media reported that part of a building collapsed as a result of the earthquake. Students were evacuated from schools on what was the first day of classes in some areas, while hospital authorities moved patients outside as a precautionary measure. Emergency services were deployed to assess structural damage and ensure public safety as aftershocks remained a concern.

Indonesia also issued tsunami warnings for several regions, including parts of Kalimantan on Borneo Island and Sulawesi. The country's weather agency warned that tsunami waves could reach heights of up to three metres in some locations. Power outages were reported in affected areas, and residents were urged to move to higher ground immediately while authorities monitored developments along coastlines.

The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) called for the immediate evacuation of residents living in coastal areas across nine provinces, including Sarangani, Davao Occidental, Tawi-Tawi and Sulu. The agency also advised boat owners in harbours, estuaries and shallow coastal waters to secure their vessels and stay away from the waterfront. Boats already at sea were instructed to remain in deeper waters until authorities issued further updates.

The Philippines is among the world's most disaster-prone nations due to its location along the Pacific Ring of Fire, a region known for frequent seismic and volcanic activity. Earthquakes, volcanic eruptions and tropical storms are common hazards faced by the archipelago each year. As authorities continue to assess the situation following the powerful quake, information regarding the full extent of damage, injuries or casualties remains limited, with emergency teams working to determine the impact on affected communities.
